Resurfacing
The last couple of months have been pretty rocky ones for me. Just as quickly as things changed in amazing and wonderful ways last spring, life changed in (seemingly) not very good ways upon moving back to Boston this fall. What I’m coming to realize, however, is that many of these changes (most of them, probably) are just normal adjustments that I’d be making no matter where I was this fall—it’s just harder to adjust to them when I’m in the same environment that I’ve been in for the past four years.
I figure the best way to move beyond the bad things is to focus on what is good right now. A rundown:
- I’m living in a wonderful apartment, with wonderful real person furniture, and with a roommate who puts up with me. We’re having a party this weekend! Wine and cheese, I imagine, and much much more.
- Working for a theatre1 means that I often get free tickets to shows. So far, I’ve seen The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee with Christen and I am My Own Wife with Amy and Emma.
- The HRG&SP fiftieth anniversary2 is coming up soon and it looks like it’s going to be amazing.
- Still being in Boston means that I get to hang out with my college friends, and being out of college means that I can actually officially be friends with people who previously had to keep some measure of professional distance because I was a student. Case in point: Martin came up from New York on Monday and we went out for drinks at Grafton. Now that he’s a hot shot litigator (or at least an associate hot shot litigator) and not a tutor, the possibilities for fun are endless.
- I’m eating five meals each week at the Dudley Coop, a cooperative Harvard dorm housed in a beautiful Victorian mansion in my neighborhood. Coopers are fun, and (added plus!) several of my friends moved into the coop this year. Also, several folks there are fans of the only TV show I watch right now…
- …Battlestar Galactica. I love it. It’s fabulous.
- I ordered Paint By Number kits of Gilbert and Sullivan and they are more fabulous than I could have ever hoped for. Much fun.
1I should probably note here that I’m not going to write about work in this blog; to report (as I already have done) that I am employed is enough. Given the number of people who’ve been fired for writing on the internet about their jobs, I’m going to do the prudent thing and just not do it. Assume the best about my job; I certainly hope your assumptions are the truth.↩
2If any recent HRG&SP alums are reading this: please go ahead and buy your tickets now. Things will fill up and then we won’t be able to see you at the fabulous, fabulous Victorian ball.↩
