Packing and Producing
I’m in the midst of boxing all my things up and preparing them to be put in storage. It’s much less of a hassle than last year—I must have fewer things, or have accumulated fewer things than before. My friend Rob came over yesterday and helped me for about an hour, in which time we packed five boxes and I began to feel significantly less worried about getting it all done.
On an unrelated note, I was reading an article about Howard Stringer in the New Yorker, and came across this bit about producing:
For a moment, Stringer paged through the notebook, then looked up. “The last time I truly knew what I was doing,” he said, “was when I was producing the ‘CBS Evening News’”—from 1981 to 1984—”because I felt in command of all aspects of the process. Even though it was very collaborative and people did things I couldn’t do, I really felt I could bring everyone together to accompish what we had in mind, to achieve the desired goal. I was very happy doing that job.”
That’s exactly the way I feel about producing. That’s why I like doing it, that’s why I’m pursuing arts administration (which is such an unexciting and clunky name for the job, but I suppose if my title were Lord High Everything Else instead of Producer people might not take me seriously enough).
This weekend, I’ll be heading off to Copenhagen with Mom, Dad, Phyllis and Blake, and from there I’ll be running around Scandinavia on my own and then down to Turkey to visit my aunt Erin and uncle Jacques. Time and internet connection permitting, I’ll be attempting to put updates up here, and posting photos on Flickr.
