Shakespeare and the Trickster Archetype
I’ve just had a breakthrough in writing my Shakespeare paper: the conflict in The Merchant of Venice between Portia and Shylock is very much like that in traditional trickster narratives. Perhaps I should thank Neil Gaiman for keeping this kind of character bouncing around in my head—his latest novel, Anansi Boys, which I just finished, is all about tricksters.
